How To Fix Neck Pain with Forward Head Posture Brace and Exercises

Understand Forward Head Posture Syndrome & The Dangers it Poses

forward-head-posture-fix1Forward head posture is a condition characterized by a protruding head ans is also known by other names including text neck and FHP. This posture is usually involuntarily, which is one reason why it is hard to deal with or reverse.

It is important to resolve this issue because it can be very damaging to your health. Forward head posture could lead to lasting damage and could worsen as time goes by, so this post should help you to understand methods to get rid of your text neck and live a healthier, happier life.

Common Forward Head Posture Symptoms

The first thing you should do is try to detect some of the symptoms that are usually associated with forward head posture.

There is no need to worry if you suspect you have this problem. This syndrome affects a lot of people in varying degrees, and it is not something to be ashamed of, though it is something that needs to be taken care of.

The Dreadful Headache

One of the most common symptoms associated with the forward head posture is a headache. Posture specialists have found that the reason most people with this problem experience a headache deals with the levator scapulae muscles that link the neck to the shoulder blades.

The levator scapulae is strained beyond capacity when one is suffering from the forward head posture syndrome (also known as the upper crossed syndrome).

Over-straining these muscles places tension on the suboccipital nerves, which is what ultimately triggers a headache.

Terrible Neck Pain

It comes to no surprise that pushing your head forward would add strain to your neck muscles, just as it will for your levator scapulae muscles.

At this point, what occurs is your upper-torso muscles become tense, and the muscles on your neck are weakened due to exhaustion. The combination of these two causes tension to the neck muscles and leads to neck pain.

These are just some of the symptoms associated with forward head posture syndrome, but there are more that you need to be aware of, like the following:

  • Rounded shoulder, which is the result of the body shoulder attempting to offset excess strain
  • Back pain due to excess strain that starts at the neck and goes down
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction or bruxism, which is caused by forcing your jawbone to misalign
  • Bruxism usually leads to teeth-clenching
  • Fatigue, due to excess stress you are putting on your body
  • Arthritis after years of strain and possible muscle, joint, or nerve damage
  • Pinched nerves if they are strained long enough
  • Neck and back motion might be decreased due to the excess strain put upon them
  • Facial pain due to jawbone misalignment
  • Height loss, especially if you let the syndrome worsen
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms due to the tension
  • Muscle spasms when the muscles get too weak to sustain the tension
  • Sore chest muscles after walking or sitting
  • Sleep apnea because your jawbone is misaligned

These symptoms cannot be ignored, making the forward head syndrome something you need to address as soon as possible.

This Syndrome Can Lead to Other Problems

achy backAccording to experts, the reason this syndrome is so vexing to the overall structure of the body deals with the weight of the head.

It seems that you add 10 pounds to your head’s weight for every inch you move forward. One should keep in mind that these 10 pounds will start a chain reaction because the neck, shoulders, and other muscles can only hold on for so long.

This means if the forward head posture is not addressed, then the 10 additional pounds will force the head to move forward another inch, and it will continue.

You may have to deal with other problems if you allow this issue to worsen.

Bruxism is one of the symptoms associated with this syndrome, which can lead to other issues. Bruxism has been known to deform the face if it goes untreated for enough time. It also causes excessive tooth wear due to the teeth clenching and a misaligned bite. This could lead to cavities or even tooth loss.

Perhaps one of the most undesirable outcomes of this syndrome is the fact that your lung vitality is diminished.

A study performed by numerous doctors, and some of staff at UCLA, found that the vitality of the lungs was reduced by 30 percent if enough pressure was forced upon the cervical spine.

Lung vitality is referring to the amount of air that you can breathe in and out. The study showed that the added pressure needed to be around 30 pounds.

This means that the head only needs to be about 3 inches out of alignment. This problem could affect your health and life in several ways.

For one, it means that exercise and sports will be a lot harder because you will be unable to breathe in enough air. It should be noted that several organs in your body will function at less than optimal performance due to the lack of oxygen.

Studies have shown that the lack of oxygen could lead to problems related to the brain, such as poor concentration and loss of short-term memory.

Rectifying Rounded Shoulders In A Few Simple Steps

With an increase in the use of technology for social pleasure, accompanied by a rise in stationary jobs and office-based work, it is no wonder that back pain and neck pain are becoming so prevalent.

No so long ago it was only the older generation who complained of such issues, now medical practitioners complain they they are even treating young children for posture and technology-related problems!

Rounded shoulders ranks pretty high on the list of such related problems. Surprisingly though, a significant improvement can be seen by following a simple set of rules.

1. Follow A Specific Exercise Plan

Your medical practitioner will likely be able to either show you a set of exercises to follow daily, or refer you to a specialist such as an orthopedic team. The key point here is to strictly follow the exercise plan, making it as much a part of your routine as eating breakfast and brushing your teeth.

Some of the exercises the practitioner may give you are as follows:

  • Wall Angel Exercise
  • Banded Stretching (also known as band pull-aparts)
  • Chest Stretch
  • Scapular Push-ups

2. Correcting Forward Head Posture Through Exercise

Since rounded shoulders are often a result of weak back muscles accompanied with tight chest muscles, a moderate back and core strengthening exercise session will also work to strengthen your back and all the muscles connected inside.

Strengthening your back makes good posture much easier, and good posture puts you well on the way to fixing rounded shoulders.

3. Changing Your Approach To Work And Pleasure

For many of us, our work involves sitting, often at a laptop or computer. Then when we come home to relax, we usually find ourselves back in front of a screen!

It may take a while to adjust to a new habit, but incorporating one, or more, of the following suggestions can see substantial long-term improvement for rounded shoulders:

  • Use a stand-up work station for at least one hour per day
  • Re-adjust your laptop layout (laptops are killers for posture)
  • Use an external keyboard and mouse and place the laptop itself on a raised box

It may take a few days to get used to the new set-up, but endure the transition, it’s well worthwhile

Certainly rounded shoulders are becoming a common complaint within a wide age bracket. Significantly improving the problem will take time and effort, but you will undoubtedly be grateful you put in the work.

Decide on a daily exercise plan with your practitioner, work to strengthen your back and core muscles and try to adjust a few of your daily habits to improve overall posture. Then you’ll see that rectifying rounded shoulders really is possible in a few simple steps.

What Causes This Posture Issue?

There are many reasons why this problem might begin, such as an accident that affected the neck, but there are other less obvious reasons why someone might develop forward head posture syndrome.

In fact, a study that was published in the “Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation” showed a connection between this syndrome and those who use the computer.

The study was performed on people who work with computers. It revealed that 60.5 percent of those who experience neck pain have this forward head posture syndrome.

You should remember that using the computer is simply one activity, but there are several other activities that resemble this one.

For example, using a phone or a tablet could also have a similar effect.

You should be weary of any activity that may force your neck forward and take conscious steps to sit or stand as straight as possible.

The following are other activities that may force your head forward:

  • Using your television, especially if it is close to you
  • Playing video games on a television or other types of screens
  • Wearing a backpack that is too heavy
  • Gardening, especially when dealing with small plants
  • Certain jobs like hair styling, massage therapists, painters, writers, or surgeons
  • Driving without considering your driving posture

You might find this hard to believe, but there are some psychological triggers that can also lead someone to develop this particular issue. One possible trigger is bullying at school. Children seem to develop this issue when they are bullied. Usually it is a subconscious way to hide from their tormentors. The same goes for people who feel depressed, as it subconsciously helps them feel tucked away from the world.

It is of the utmost importance that you deal with any of these issues before they force you, or a loved one, to develop this syndrome. If you already have the syndrome, these activities can continue to make matters worse, so they are very important to address.

What Can Be Done to Fix the Forward Head Posture Syndrome After Years of it?

There are a few things that you can do to try to fix this problem, such as some exercises that have been proven effective.

Yoga, for example, has been proven to improve posture stability, and it really isn’t that difficult to get started with yoga as you may think.

One of the yoga exercises that seems to help is the Mountain Pose. This pose involves standing straight as possible and opening your chest while keeping your arms at your sides. Be sure to tuck in your tailbone as much as possible.

Of course, this is just one exercise that yoga has to offer to strengthen your back and improve your posture.

You also have the following:

  • The standing forward bend pose
  • The cobra pose
  • The hero pose
  • The child’s pose
  • The locust pose

You can talk to a yoga instructor about other options that may be helpful for you.

Keep in mind that yoga offers one set of exercises that could be helpful to you, as there are several more that should be effective in correcting the syndrome.

Be sure to pay attention to exercises that concentrate on upper body strength, back strength, and core muscle strengthening.

You can also try to improve ergonomics in your home, car, and in your office. You can do this by simply buying chairs, sofas, or sitting accessories that help you sit straight.

These accessories and sitting furniture could be purchased in select office supplies stores, or you can simply by them online.

It is clear to see how important it is to understand forward head posture syndrome and how dangerous it can be to you or a loved one, so be sure to deal with it as soon as you can.

Ergonomic Sit Stand Stools: 3 Of The Best Wobble Chairs

Wobble Stool By Uncaged Ergonomics

For those of you that just want a sit stand stool that just works

The Wobble Stool is a good looking stool that ticks all the right boxes.

Its features include:

22-33 inch, incremental adjustments which can help to facilitate movement while sitting as well as a triangular saddle seat that has rounded edges for improved comfort.

However in my opinion, 2 of the best and unique features are its rounded base that lets the stool “move” with you, and its strong rubber base that helps it stick to the ground.

Positives include:

  • Compact and takes up little space.
  • Simple to adjust the elevation with the hydraulic raise post.
  • Simple to maneuver around… you can tilt it and change positions easily.
  • Easy assembly straight out of the box with very few parts to put together, (a big plus for someone like me who just wants to get things up and running!).
  • Helps to strengthen core and leg mobility by promoting good posture.
  • Wobble free thanks to its clever base, which also means that it stays in position.
Vestil CPRO

If cost is an issue but you don't want to compromise on quality

The Vestil CPRO is great compromise of quality and affordability.

Don’t let the word compromise put you off though because it really is a great chair.

Some positives are:

  • Portable; easy to take to and from your place of work, i.e. you can use it in your office and then take it back home to use it in your home.
  • Very quick to adjust the height and also very easy. No pinched fingers or having to bring out power tools just to get it to fit to you!
  • Ergonomically sound.
  • Can fold up for easy portability and storage

From reading through other peoples reviews and checking around the internet, it seems that this is a very popular sit stand stool for astronomers.

However it is very flexible and is suited to a wide range of environments.

Muvman Basic

Money is no object...I want only the best!

This is a very good ergo sit stand and work wobble stool for most any environment, excellent in fact.

You  might be wondering:

What do you actually get?

Well I am going to let Muvman do the talking because I don’t think I could put it any better:

“Featuring one of the most versatile pneumatic lifts in the category, a strong, supportive base, plus a bold design that’s not only stylish but practical, the Muvman stool is an exciting new active seating option.

…The plush microfiber seat isn’t just great looking, it adds friction to keep you secure on the seat while you lean forward. The front edge of the seat is flexible and adaptable. Other flat-front seats tend to impede the blood circulation behind the legs, but Muvman’s unique anti-pressure-point-design alleviates undue pressure. If you’re more used to a saddle seat, simply rotate the seat forty-five degrees and use the corner as a saddle. How’s that for adaptable? What’s more, the seat’s slight arch keeps your pelvis upright, supporting the natural S-shape curve of the spine.

Another thoughtful feature of the seat design is the ergo handle on the back of the seat. This practical grip makes taking Muvman to a colleague’s desk or to another room simple and convenient.

Muvman’s pneumatic lift is one of the most versatile in the industry. Not only is the height range adjustment one of the best in the category (20″-33″ seat height on the standard, and 23.5″ – 36″ on the tall lift), it also has the unique ability to tilt 360° while the base remains flat on the ground thanks to the spring strut in the baseplate. The innovative, patented flexzone® technology allows the lift to move freely but securely in the base. The strut positions the pneumatic lift at a 4° forward tilt so that your hips remain limber and healthy at all seat heights.”

(NOTE: This description is directly from the manufacturer and not from Ergonomic Health)

So there you go, lots of words like plush and bold and versatile!

Let me level with you:

This is a great chair, really.

However, I haven’t put it as the winner because of some specific reasons.

We have spoken with some of the owners who say it’s great and the product is sound with many things that make it superior to the other stools on this list.

But if you really just want the best of all worlds, from price to comfort to ease of use, then the ergo Work Wobble Stool at the top of the post is my recommendation.

So What Is the Conclusion here?

All of the models listed above are brilliant and do the job that you want them to do without any fuss.

Moreover, you will be very happy all of them.

However there can only be 1 winner and only 1 that I would recommend and buy for myself.

For me, the Wobble Stool by Uncaged Ergonomics is the clear winner.

It sits in a nice sweet spot between being affordable, but also uncompromising on quality of materials and unique features.

My favorite part is the hard wearing, rubberized ball base, which gives freedom of movement as well as keeping you firmly stuck to the ground.

From speaking with others who actually use sit stand stools on a daily basis, it is clear to me that these are the 2 most important aspects that they look for.

I think it looks nice. Again it doesn’t set the design world on fire; but it does exactly what it sets out to do: be a usable computer office seat.
It will go equally nicely in a modern office desk or a home office behind a computer or a drawing board, whatever your profession may be.
Like some of the other ergo office desk seats reviewed here, the Alera Elusion Series stool uses premium materials to keep it solid and help it to maintain its integrity; which is vitally important for ergonomic chairs.
It also has some strong padding in the seat to ensure that you will remain comfortable and not damage your back in many years.
This is actually true of all the seats in this mammoth review, but it is still worth mentioning because we are looking at different types of office seat here!
If you buy an expensive set of dining room stools, you sometimes find the padding getting softer over time and end up replacing them all (in my experience anyway).
With these stools, you will not have to replace the padding very often, if at all. And even if the padding goes after 5 years, you can always sell the actual seat on to someone else and get yourself a nice new one.
Bottom Line:
Very comfortable, decent amount of adjust ability and some nice extra added features thrown in to boot!
You will be hard pressed to find an ergonomic office stool this quality.

Wow, what a stool!

The Flash Furniture BL-X-5M-BK-GG seems to be quite the adjustable ergo seat.

With options to adjust many different aspects including:

  • Built-In Lumbar Support
  • Tilt Lock Mechanism
  • Tilt Tension Adjustment Knob
  • Swivel Seat
  • Pneumatic Seat Height Adjustment
  • Flip Up Arms

This is the stool for the tinkerer and obsessive alike, (both of those are me which is why I would put serious consideration into buying this one if I hadn’t SAYL Chair by Herman Miller – Official Retailer – Basic – Black.

I don’t think that there is anything particularly stand out with the design here.

It looks good, not great. More like an above average office recliner, rather than a complex and good looking comfortable seat that will make your coworkers swoon, (I do not think many folks would swoon over an ergonomic seat, but there will be some!).

Bottom line, I would be more than happy to use this chair in my home office.

With a heavy duty nylon base and dual wheel casters, you can be sure that it can withstand metal buttons on jeans and trousers.

To top it off, the base cushion also contains CA117 Fire Retardant Foam.

Now I will level with you, I don’t know the ins and outs of fire retardant materials, but I would think that this can only be a good thing.

Bottom Line:

Good chair, hard wearing.

OK, this is probably one of the most functional and durable ergonomic stools I have ever reviewed!

I will just give you a run through of some of its features, as described in its marketing material as received from their website:

  • Contemporary High Back Executive Swivel Office Seat
  • Pressurized Lumbar Support Knob
  • Triple Paddle Control Mechanism
  • Back Tilt Tension
  • Back Tilt Lock Paddle Control
  • Locking Tilt Paddle Control
  • Paddle Adjustable Pneumatic Seat Height Adjustment
  • Height Adjustable Padded Nylon Arms
  • Heavy Duty Nylon Base with Rigid End Caps
  • Dual Wheel Casters
  • Black “LeatherSoft” Upholstery. “LeatherSoft” is leather and polyurethane for added Softness and Durability
  • CA117 Fire Retardant Foam

I am starting to see a pattern with Flash Furniture ergonomic office seats. One is that they are always very decent quality at incredible prices and secondly, they use very high quality materials and CA117 Fire Retardant Foam in most of their products.

Like I said in the previous Flash Furniture stool review, I am not entirely sure what the CA117 part means, but to quote the internet it is the official US Government authorized, non toxic fire retardant material.

I don’t think you can get a better seal of safety than from good old Uncle Sam.

I like the look of this chair.

I think that it is perfectly nice looking and can fit in easily to most settings.

For example, I work from home and so it doesn’t really matter what kind of recliner I have because no one will see it apart from me and some friends etc.

However, I still have a certain style of look to my place which I really want to keep and putting in something like the wildcard at the end, would really disrupt the whole thing I have going, (think old school library, but Ikea!)

The Flash Furniture High Back ergonomic armchair here would actually be a very nice addition to my room.

It will also fit very nicely into a normal office setting.

I mean the kind of office that most normal people like me and you work in (well not me any more but I have spent many years in a cubicle, believe me!), with partitions and tiny little kitchen rooms littered with novelty mugs :/

This chair is made from some pretty tough stuff including very strong nylon, so it should last the course.

It also has dual wheels castors which basically means that it is less likely the wheels will fall off when wheeling it over uneven surfaces.

The one thing that would worry me slightly is the special “LeatherSoft” upholstery. It has been specially made for comfort and softness, but this could make it a little bit more likely to rip some time in the future.

On the other hand, Flash Furniture is a quality American brand that has been in the business for some time.

From the reviews of it, it seems that this chair is really sturdy with particular attention being given to the armrests and adjustable handles.

Bottom Line:

I think that the Flash Furniture High Back Leather Chair is more that worth it.

The fact that it looks good, is strong and sturdy, has many different options for getting it to fit you just right and usually sits at a discount; should give you plenty of reason to get out there invest in today for delivery usually tomorrow!

With pneumatic seat height adjustment, lumbar support, back angle adjustment, tilt adjustable ability, position lock, adjustable armrest, waterfall edge, high weight bearing ability + More, the Viva Office Ergonomic Bonded Leather Executive and Managerial Office Chair has enough features to keep the most ardent ergonomics expert happy!

As I said right at the beginning, making sure to have to correct amount of adjustment points, without going overboard is the key to the best ergonomic seats.

The Viva High Back has pulled off this feat well within most peoples budget and added some very nice extras such as premium leather bonded with strong PVC.

Make no mistake, this chair is all about high quality and it looks like it means business.

It looks great and also that you could just sink into it. In fact I would use this kind of stool to watch a movie at home in ergonomic style!

I don’t know, but brushed metal and leather together just makes sense to me and looks fantastic.

Would this make a great addition to your work space? Well only you can answer that, but I do not think that there will be many places that this doesn’t fit in and make your colleges jealous!

In comparison to the Flash Furniture ergonomic chairs in this review which contain a special type of leather called “LeatherSoft”; the Viva has leather bonded with strong, hard wearing PVC.

Now it may not be as soft, but it will might be able to last for a long time and be could be able to knock away most things you could throw at it.

Bottom Line:

This chair is one that I would highly consider buying my self if I was looking for one, but ultimately I would go for the Alera Elusion.

In all seriousness though, this is a fantastic stool that is usually an amazing investment for your work space.

Do yourself a good deed, treat your self and invest in comfort and you not regret it!

Like most of the seats on this post, the Whalen Furniture Astoria ergo office recliner features a decent amount of adjust ability.

With the all important lumbar support and padded armrests, this is definitely back and arm friendly.

Armrests are often overlooked when considering a comfortable seat, but it is really another important aspect you think about.

Ergonomic office chairs don’t only help to improve posture and back pain, they also help with many other things like protecting against trapped nerves, tennis elbow and the dreaded carpel tunnel syndrome.

the Whalen Furniture Astoria alleviates some of these problems with its padded armrests.

Another great feature is that the lumbar support is actually removable. This is important for times where ergonomics can sometimes get in the way, for example if you are slightly bigger or smaller than average.

Now then, this one is a bit of a decisive one. I think you either love it or hate it.

Me personally, I think that it is quite nice looking and kind of reminds me of my dads old office seat.

It also all depends on the type of office you are in, the job you have and what kind of style you have.

Would I buy this? Short answer: no I would not. This is not because I do not like it, but rather that I just don’t think that it would suit me or is my kind of look.

However, it still looks great and is a fantastic fit for someone in more of a professional setting; a lawyer or doctor perhaps?

This is on the higher end of the chairs in this list. However it is very good quality and with a premium leather and wood finish, it is very good value of features.

With a strong, heavy construction and a smooth rolling wheelbase, the quality here is apparent and indicative of some rivals.

I think that this is seat that will last you a long time.

Bottom Line:

If you are sort of person who likes to buy once and replace not often, this is going to be a good choice for you.

From speaking with some of the owners of this seat, you will see that in terms of quality, Whalen Furniture is a very good, high quality American brand.

Best Ergonomic Office Computer Chair WILDCARD!

Thought I would just add this wildcard in because well, look at it! It’s an exercise ball on wheels for goodness sake.

Disclaimer: If anyone wants this or has already bought one, all comments are my own opinion and we can still be friends no matter how bonkers you may be!

Product Description:

The Evolution Chair truly is “the chair for optimum health” – according to their website.

The Evolution Stool successfully combines these core-strengthening elements with the maneuverability and versatility of a rolling office chair.

The Evolution Seat reduces spinal compression to provide comfort for the user.

It certainly seems that this ergonomic chair (ball chair, chair ball?) does a pretty good job at making one more comfortable at work.

With no back it also has the added benefit of working your abs and the muscles of your lower back, which is only a good thing.

It has a base with wheels so that you can move it about around the office and comes flat-packed that involves some construction.

But this is minimal and really on par with screwing in the wheels and blowing up the ball.

OK, I am going to be honest with you, I think this thing looks ridiculous!

I am really sorry if this is the stool you were looking for and this is really just my personal opinion.

The reason I say this is because just imagine having this at your office and bobbing up and down looking like a bit of an odd one!

To be entirely fair, all of the reviews of this stool point to it being a good one for lower back pain and it really forces you to sit upright.

However, there are many other out there that are just as good and are not so radical so as to make you stand out, (unless that is what you want?)

It also has to be noted here that although this is supposed to be a post about the best ergonomic chairs under a certain amount, I cannot endorse this chair in all good consciousness because although it meets the mark we set ourselves for this post, (exercise ball that you can get on its own, which has been placed onto the bottom of an average, non-ergonomic office chair!

If you really have your heart set on this stool, save yourself some money and just get the exercise ball!

It is cheaper and will do the exact same thing but be much friendlier on your pocket book.

Like I have already said above, it is basically an exercise ball which in themselves are actually made of very thick, strong rubber.

The bottom, wheeled section seems to be some kind of hard plastic which looks tough enough, but is cheap. Click here if you want to learn more about the ergonomic furniture.

Enough said I think!

How to Improve Ergonomics At Work & At Home

The term ‘ergonomics’ takes its origin from Greek and can be described in two words, work and law.

Basically, it can be explained as the analysis or study of the job or work. It aims at designing or creating the job in such a way that it meets the needs of the worker.

It works towards creating a working space in which all its related factors, processes and systems have been exclusively designed to meet the needs and requirements of the employees.

It encourages the workers to work in a healthy and positive manner devoid of all physical hazards, disasters or loss to the worker in all possible aspects.

By enabling the job to be more adaptive and comfortable, many hazards such as tendinitis, trigger finger, spinal complaints and much more are avoided to a good extent.

Ergonomics focuses on all aspects of work like physical stress factors such as joint, muscle, bones and nerves discomfort and damage to other environmental factors. In short, it aims at creating a convenient, user friendly and stress free working condition for the worker by providing products and systems that enable improved interaction, co-operation and comfort.

How to Improve Ergonomics in the Workplace?

Initiating and maintaining an ergo working space is one of the most important aspects of an organization or company. When the workers are happy and comfortable in their workplace, the productivity (learn more) of a company is increased enormously.

Some of the common benefits of an ergo office are as follows:

  • It reduces costs a great deal by preventing the compensation costs that recur when the employees face health issues and other related hazards.
  • It improves the productivity and output effectively. The good posture options and less stressful working space, incur more efficiency from the workers.
  • It improves the quality of work as the workers feel more safe and comfortable and therefore can allot their entire focus and concentration on the work to be done.
  • It improves the goodwill of the company and initiates a good relationship between the employer and the employees. When the company makes the required effort to take the workers best interests into consideration, the workers also feel obliged to give in their best shot in all that they do. It is totally a win-win situation.
It provides a safe working environment for all involved.

In order to take care of the worker’s comfort, focus should be allotted to the posture and other aspects as well.

When the posture is not correct, it can lead to many musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorder is basically tissue damage of the nerves, ligaments, joints, spinal discs and so on.

In order to prevent long term or chronic damage, corrective measures should be taken. Some of the ergonomic steps are discussed below:

In order to establish the right sitting posture, a good chair is a must. This prevents many spinal and neck based injuries and damage.

The height of the chair should be such that the foot rests comfortably on the floor or on a footrest. This enables free and enhanced blood circulation in the legs.

The armrest should be designed in a way that allows the entire arm to be rested comfortably and the material should be soft and soothing.

The backrest is of crucial importance as it supports the entire spinal system. The back rest should be wide and long enough to provide secure resting place for the entire back, especially the lower back. Incorrect back posture can cause spinal disc misplacement in the long run.

The seats of the chair should be adjustable to the height of the user and should be padded and rounded corners for extended comfort. Finally, the base of the chair should be secure, stable and come with a five legged option as it offers more security.

So, do you think you have an ergonomic chair at workplace/home? If not, get one without any further delay.

Ergonomic Computer Facilities:

In the modern day office scenario, almost all jobs require the workers to spend long hours in front of the computer screen.

This is one of the main reasons why the computer parts should be ergonomically supported for better posture and comfort.

It is recommended to have adjustable and removable keyboards, brightness control, contrast modifications, decreased distance between the screen and the user, suitable lighting and anti-glare options or filters among other comfortable functions.

Frequent Breaks:

Working for long hours at a stretch can be detrimental to health and also affect productivity adequately. Allowing beaks at regular intervals is a good way to refresh and relax the workers.

Vision breaks are very important and should be taken often, lasting from a few seconds to a minute. At regular intervals look away from the computer screen, relax and adjust your eyes and vision and then resume work again.

Task breaks are also good to provide more focus and change. If you have been doing just one type of work for long, take a break and adhere to other tasks and then get back to the previous one. In order to relax your body and muscle, go in for stretch breaks

Lighting undoubtedly, plays a very significant role in transforming the ergonomics of a working space. Low lighted conditions can lead to extensive strain, discomfort to the eyes and lead to fluctuating eye power and related damage. It is best advised to make the use of full spectrum lights as opposed to the traditional lighting options as the former are designed to offer increased brightness, durability and less strain to the vision.

Lighting should never be too high or too less and in order to have the right brightness, it is a good idea to consult the workers and then make the required changes or improvisations.

Noise Control:

Too much of noise and disturbance can cause undue stress and irritation to the workers involved and also make it difficult for them to concentrate on the work to be done.

A good solution to reducing noise pollution is to identity all the equipment that create excess noise and then segregate and place them in different rooms away from the workers.

Employ panels that offer acoustical absorption. Arrange for regular equipment maintenance and servicing facilities for smooth and durable working of the equipment. Finally, a good alternative is to use earplugs, which is a simple, cost-effective and convenient solution!

How to Improve Ergonomics at Home?

Creating and maintaining an ergonomic friendly home is not just any old task, but a daunting one if you do not get the concept right.

Once you know where the struggle lies, it is a breeze to initiate the transformation of your home. We spend adequate time at home and one of the most important things to do is to make your home the most comfortable place you can ever be in.

Often times, we neglect how things and products work and as a result they cause a lot of physical and mental stress respectively. In order to avoid all this, the art of ergo comes into play. For some quick pointers continue reading.

Kitchen Space:

Always opt for a cushion mat on the floor in your kitchen.

Standing for long hours on rough floor can make your legs, joints and back ache endlessly. When there is some sort of a soft support, it cushions the pain and you feel comfortable working in your space.

Try not to install too many taps in your sinks as too much of twisting and turning can affect your wrist over time. When it comes to storing things, always load them on shelves that you can reach easily, preferably between eye and knee level.

This will prevent unnecessary bending and straining of the back.

Similarly, make sure your refrigerator and other electronics are placed in a way that does not require frequent bending. For the purpose of chopping, better grip and ergonomically designed knives are available, which allow better and equal use of muscles.

For instance, this type of knife allows the muscles of the forearm and upper arm to be used which simplifies the task rather than having to balance unevenly and exerting wrong pressure that can lead to muscle and joint pain in your hands and arms.

Living Room Space:

Try as much as possible to adorn your house with furniture that is simple and light weight as too much heavy lifting can strain the back extensively. Go here to learn more:

Go for couches and sofas that are not too low or bouncy as they might affect your hip and lower back drastically.

While watching television, avoid uplifting or stretching your neck and head.

While eating, make it a point to always have your plate at a higher level which prevents the need to bend down for every morsel.

It is highly recommended to use a cervical designed pillow as it serves as a great support to your neck. At times, when you stay awake late in the night with a good book, always ensure that your neck and back is well rested or it might lead to a sharp pain in your spine and also lead to spondylitis in extreme cases.

Opt for a mattress that is not made out of foam or too much spring. The best type is the cotton filled mattresses as they are gentle on your back and offer good, stable support and deters all problems of the spine. And, to find great memory foam mattress toppers for your bedroom, head over here.

Design sinks and cabinets in a way that do not require you to bend over. Always have them at a good height, preferably near your shoulder or eye level.

Use mats wherever necessary as it will prevent you from slips and falls. Even if you do fall, you will land gently on the mats and save yourself the fracture. Another good tip is to service your faucets regularly so that you do not have to exert unnecessary pressure or stress to get them functioning. Too much pressure and twists can affect the wrist tendons.

These are some simple tips that you can follow to make your home and working space more comfortable and user friendly. The best approach is to first identity the problem, the requirements and then try creating suitable solutions for them. This way, you can make sure to cover all aspects of work and home in a systematic and improved manner.

So there you have it, a pretty comprehensive way to improve the ergonomics of both your office and your lovely home!
