Forward Head Posture is called by several names.
You might have heard it as “Scholar’s Neck,” “Reading Neck,” or even “iHunch.” No matter what is called, the Forward Head Posture is one of the most common problems that people tend to have when it comes to posture.
FHP creates a muscle imbalance between your neck and shoulder when you have this abnormal head position.
There are a number of causes for Forward Head Posture, and most of them are from everyday activities. This head posture is caused mostly by the lifestyle that you have now in this modern society.
Forward Head Posture is formed when you tend to have a repetitive stress syndromes and end up needing specialist equipment.
If you tend to move your head forward while typing on your computer or reading on your phone, you have higher chances of having this issue.
The same can be said for people who look through things like microscopes or even magnifying glasses. Your sitting position can also be a cause.
It can also be caused by carrying heavy things on your back or shoulder.
While most people are likely to have some form of this disorder; a positive thought is that it can easily be corrected.

How Does Forward Head Posture Harm You?
It can cause you many problems, to put it simply.
While there are minor, temporary issues, there are also major, permanent ones. From recurring pain for your neck to earlier degeneration of your spinal cord, this improper head posture delivers several complications.
Here is a list of several of the troubles that Forward Head Posture can cause:
- Recurring pain in your neck and shoulders – Since Forward Head Posture disrupts the natural balance between your neck and your head, it creates a direct damage for your neck and shoulder. You will feel more constant pain between these two body parts when you have Forward Head Posture.
- Height loss of more or less 2 inches – Forward Head Posture makes your body hunch. It doesn’t just make you look shorter. It actually deducts two inches of your height when compared to a natural head posture.
- Worsening spine health – Forward Head Posture is also detrimental for your spine. Because your spine has a direct connection to your skull, it is also affected. Your spine would curve unnaturally due to your Forward Head Posture. In doing so, it harms your spine. It does presents not only temporary damage but also possible permanent ones. People with Forward Head Posture are more likely to get faster and earlier spine degeneration.
- Decreased blood flow to the brain – It not only reduces your blood flow to the brain but also slows it down. This is because the posture creates an imbalance within your upper body. From your spine to your neck, it gets harder to deliver the proper amount of blood flow. It is also possible for your blood flow to slow down because your Forward Head Posture might present some roadblocks.
- Visual and hearing impairment – Since it affects some of your blood flow to your brain, it also brings problem for your sight and hearing. Your eyes and ears will get minor impairment because of your head posture. Sights and sounds that will look and sound perfectly reasonable with proper head position will be impaired.
